Frequently asked questions

What is therapy?

Psychotherapy is a process that relies on the relationship between client and therapist and employs techniques to relieve emotional, cognitive or behavioural concerns to promote mental health and wellbeing. There are many different types and approaches to therapy, so it is important to find the best fit for you and your goals. Please visit my About Page page for more information on my approach.

What can therapy help me with?

Therapy has many benefits. Some benefits include the following:

  • Greater self-understanding and self-awareness

  • Enhanced self-expression

  • Skills to improve relationships

  • Changing old behaviour and developing new ones

  • Greater self-esteem and self-confidence

  • Enhanced ability to feel, process, and regulate difficult emotions

  • Healing from past pain

  • Personal growth and development

How long is the therapy process?

Therapy can range in length of time greatly depending on the client, the goals of therapy and the type of approach used. The approach that I use helps to get to the root of the concerns you’re having to create lasting change. Because of this, it is often more long-term, however, I have had many shorter term clients as well. Ultimately, it is up to you and what you’re looking for from the process.

Do I need a referral for therapy?

No, you can reach out to me directly to set up a 15-minute no-charge phone consultation or visit my calendar to book an initial appointment.

Why is finding a therapist so hard?

Finding the right fit is necessary to reach your therapy goals, but it’s tricky to find someone whose approach, personality, and perspectives align with yours. Ultimately, you want to work with someone you can develop a safe and trusting relationship with and who also has expertise in the areas you are looking to address. On top of all this, the therapist needs to be available and accepting clients. This can make for an unpleasant shopping experience that can be extremely discouraging. If you see some things you like on my website, feel free to email me to set up a no-charge 15-minute phone consultation to see if there could be a fit. The best way to see is to connect and get a feel for yourself!

The traditional Blackfoot name of what is now called the City of Calgary is “Mohkinstsis”, which refers to the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. I acknowledge that I am located on traditional Treaty 7 territory, the homelands of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksiká, Káínaa, Piikani; the Îyârhe Nakoda Nations: Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Wesley; the Tsuut’ina Nation; and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. I acknowledge the many generations of Indigenous peoples who have and lived on, cared for and honoured these lands.
